Apr. 22 The defense department announces that some of America’s larger cities will soon be guarded with the new Nike Hercules atomic missiles


May 06 Massachusetts Senator John F. Kennedy awarded Pulitzer Prize for Profiles in Courage.


Jul. 06 Tennis star Althea Gibson of the United States becomes the first black to win the women’s singles title at Wimbledon.


Aug. 26 Moscow announces that it has successfully tested its first intercontinental ballistic missile.


Aug. 30 Senator Strom Thurmond sets a new filibuster record in the Congress speaking twenty-four hours, twenty-seven minutes against civil rights legislation.
